Don Tapscott, co-author of The Naked Corporation, launched THE CIO SUMMIT® November 3-4, 2003

Best-selling author and world-renowned business strategist Don Tapscott opened THE CIO SUMMIT® 2003, held November 3 and 4, 2003, at the Hilton Toronto. Tapscott, author of The Digital Economy and co-author of the landmark Paradigm Shift, has recently released, with co-author David Ticoll, The Naked Corporation: How the Age of Transparency Will Revolutionize Business. The book, a guide to the new age of corporate openness, explores the fundamental shift in values companies are undertaking in order to survive in a post-Enron, post-9/11 world. It’s bound to break new ground on the issues of governance and corporate responsibility.

“We were delighted to have Don as our lead-off keynote speaker,” says Barry Clavir, Executive Producer of THE CIO SUMMIT®. “He’s an absolute heavyweight in the world of corporate strategy, he’s a great speaker and he’s always out there on the leading edge — he always has something unique and constructive to communicate.”

In addition to Tapscott, perennial favourite Dr. Peter Keen returned to this year’s conference as a keynote speaker. A writer, researcher, consultant and educator, Dr. Keen is the author of more than 30 books designed to help senior business executives harness the full potential of information technology.

One of the biggest tests facing IT executives is that they are no longer responsible just for IT; most are now part of their organizations’ business management teams, charged with an increasing roster of responsibilities.

As organizations rely more and more on computers and telecommunications, leadership abilities and the skills to understand and focus scarce technology resources are critical success factors. What does it take to be an IT leader these days? Where are the new leaders coming from and, more importantly, where are they going? What are the key issues that face the organization of the future and how does IT fit in?

THE CIO SUMMIT® 2003 attempted to answer these and other important questions by exploring the following themes:

Leadership Issues: Knowledge Management and the
Rapidly Changing Workforce
Collaboration Conundrums: Making Relationships Work
Integrating the Enterprise: Losing the Loose Ends
Mobilizing the Machine: Untethering the Oganization

This year, we introduced an exciting new approach that leverages the thought and experience of an entire industry. Not only did we offer world-class speakers — as reflected in our continuing relationship with Dr. Peter Keen — but we also providde facilitated sessions that offered participants the opportunity to identify the key areas of concern and helped develop effective strategies and approaches to resolve these issues.
